Key Stage 3 Science / Key Stage 4 / Key Stage 5 Science

The aim of the science department is to give pupils a wide ranging understanding of science and its application to the modern world. Practical work and investigative tasks are used to develop their ability to plan work in detail, gather evidence in a methodical and fair manner and comment critically on the evidence they obtain. With the Math School historically focussing on the education of boys for employment in the Chatham dockyard, we aim to continue the development of skills that will enable our pupils to pursue careers in the applied sciences and engineering in addition to pure science.

The biology, chemistry and physics departments are staffed by four subject specialist teachers supported by additional teaching staff and technicians. The department has 9 fully serviced science laboratories and an additional teaching room.

We have 2 wildlife areas providing a home to a range of plant, aquatic, mammal and avian species, including breeding mallard ducks on the pond. Bird species sighted in recent years include peregrine falcon, sparrowhawk, red-legged partridge and Mediterranean gull.

Academic Support The science department offers support to help pupils in their studies throughout the year and especially in the run up to examinations. These sessions are advertised within the department. Any pupil wanting additional support is advised to see their subject teacher or the Head of Science.
