History Mission statement
History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time; it illuminates reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life, and brings us tidings of antiquity.
Key Stage 3
History in Years 7-9 explores Britain from 1066 to the end of the 20th century. As well as studying notable individuals and key events, we also research the ways in which the lives of people have changed over this period. We discuss key questions such as the influence different cultures have had upon Britain and how technology has altered lives.
Key Stage 4
At GCSE we study the history of both modern 20th Century Europe, in particular the development of Russia into the Soviet Union and the Cold War. We also study how British society has changed over a long period of time as a result of empire and migration. Finally we study the earlier period of the reign of Edward III. Pupils also work to develop their understanding and skills of historical enquiry, prior to their GCSE exams.
Key Stage 5
During the Sixth Form the department offers both History and Politics to A level. The History course covers the development of fascism in Italy, changes in Germany from 1918 to 1989 and how Britain’s involvement in various wars (Napoleonic, Crimean, Boer and First World War) has shaped our nation. In Politics, as well as looking at the British political system, we study the various ideologies which underpin current political thought.
