English and Mathematics Settings


English

Key stage 3
 

Year 7 - 9 all taught in mixed ability form groups.

Keystage 4

Year 10

Year 10 are taught in mixed ability and mixed house groups: Y Half (Bridge/Castle/Gordon) and Z Half (Pitt/River/Thetford) House Groups. The set number does not signify ability, and is purely for administrative purposes.   

Year 11

Two top sets: Y1 and Z1

The remainder of pupils are placed into parallel sets. The set number does not signify ability, and is purely for administrative purposes. All these groups will have an even spread of ability and there are many high performing pupils in each set.

 

Mathematics

In Year 7 pupils are taught in mixed ability form groups.
 
Year 8 – top set 8Y1 and 8Z1
 
The most able pupils are placed in the top set, based on performance throughout the year and the end of year examination.
 
8 Y2/3 and 8 Z2/3
 
These are parallel sets. The set number does not signify ability.
 
Year 9 – top set 9Y1 and 9Z1
 
The most able pupils are placed in the top set, based on performance throughout the year and the end of year examination.
 
9 Y2/3 and 9 Z2/3
 
These are parallel sets. The set number does not signify ability.
 
Year 10 and 11
 
GCSE Mathematics is taught in ability groups ranging from set 1 (highest ability) to set 4 (lowest ability).
